STARS Dorset was delighted to welcome Tom Hayes MP to its premises this week, where he met with Chief Executive Officer, Helen Stevens, and Engagement Lead, Stephanie Lee, to learn more about the charity’s work across the county.
STARS Dorset is a leading pan-Dorset charity that provides specialist support to individuals affected by sexual violence.
During the visit, Tom was given a tour of the charity’s facilities and learned about the range of specialist services that STARS Dorset provides to support nearly 3,800 people each year, including 700 children, who have been affected by sexual violence or domestic abuse.
Helen and Stephanie discussed with Tom the challenges faced by the charity, as well as the opportunities ahead, including their partnership working, data sharing, and preventative education programmes. Tom was able to understand more about their work around prevention and education, helping to reduce future harm through community and school outreach.
Tom offered his support to the charity, particularly around strengthening partnership working, sharing key data learnings in Parliament, and exploring the possibility of including STARS Dorset’s insights in a future Government debate. He also spoke about the potential to host an event in Parliament, bringing together MPs and key stakeholders to highlight the importance of the charity’s work.
Helen Stevens, CEO of STARS Dorset, said:
“We were delighted to welcome Tom to STARS Dorset and to have the opportunity to share the realities of the work we do and the impact it has on people across our communities. His understanding, engagement, and willingness to support our mission mean a great deal to us. Collaboration between charities, local services, and policymakers is essential if we’re to continue making a difference for the thousands of people who rely on our support each year.”
Tom Hayes MP said:
“STARS Dorset supports thousands of people every year through trauma no one should have to face. Before becoming an MP, I ran a domestic violence and mental health charity, so I know just how vital their work is. It was a privilege to visit and hear about the inspiring work Helen, Stephanie, and the whole team are doing. Their work on prevention and education is especially powerful, and I’m looking forward to working together to amplify their voice in Parliament.”
